A report released in February by Health Affairs is predicting that healthcare spending will double by 2016.

$4.1 trillion is the expected amount, or 20 cents of every dollar.  Current healthcare spending, according to the site and the report, is at $2.1 trillion.

Whether these predictions mean that the U.S. is slowly headed toward a single-payer system is, of course, entirely up for debate.  The Health Affairs report steers clear of any policy ideas, instead gently reminding that “we will have to make important sacrifices to pay for healthcare.”

America’s per capita health spending is already the highest in the world.
