FTC to Host Workshop on Senior Medical and Benefit ID Theft

The Federal Trade Commission announced recently a workshop focused on senior identity theft and how it impacts various sectors, including the healthcare industry. The all-day event will be held in Washington on May 7.

The FTC will bring together experts from government, private industry, and public interest groups to discuss the unique challenges facing victims of senior identity theft.  The forum will include panels on different types of senior identity theft – tax and government benefits, medical, and long-term care – and will also explore the best consumer education and outreach techniques for reaching seniors.

The workshop, “Senior Identity Theft: A Problem in This Day and Age,” will be open to the public.  There is no fee to attend the Forum.  For admittance to the building, all attendees will be required to display a valid form of photo identification, such as a driver’s license.

Pre-registration is not necessary to attend the Forum, but is encouraged so that we may better plan this event.  To pre-register, please email your name and affiliation to seniorIDtheft@ftc.gov.  Participants may also submit articles or other written materials in advance of the Forum, which will be used by the FTC in understanding the issues surrounding senior identity theft.

Panelists listed in the agenda include representatives from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Social Security Administration, the IRS, and the Medical Identity Fraud Alliance.
