FTC to Hold Press Conference on Fake Debt Collector

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) late Thursday announced that it is holding a press conference next week to discuss a case involving a fake debt collector that used a call center in India to persuade people to pay debts they did not owe.

Steve Baker, Director of the FTC’s Midwest Regional Office, will host the press conference on Tuesday, February 21, 2012, at 10:30 a.m. CT (11:30 ET) at the FTC’s office in Chicago.

The announcement specifically said that the press conference will be held to “announce a complaint,” and did not elaborate on any actions currently underway.

A victim of the scam will be on hand to give her account of her experiences with the “debt collector.”
