Just a few months ago, the U.S. Supreme Court found that the President can remove the director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) at will, and it's presumed that President-elect Biden will do just that and release current Director Kathleen Kraninger once he takes office. However, before any of that happens, Biden has taken the first steps toward reassessing the CFPB by tapping Leandra English to lead his transition team's review of the agency.
English served as the CFPB Chief of Staff under the Bureau's inaugural director, Former Director Richard Cordray while Biden served as Vice President. English found herself in the middle of a political battle when Cordray resigned from his role as Director a little less than a year after President Trump took office. To prepare for his departure, Cordray promoted English to Deputy Director with the hope that she would serve in the function of Acting Director until a new permanent director was selected by Trump and confirmed by congress. Around that same time, Trump named Mick Mulvaney to the same position. A months-long standoff occurred, culminating in a judge finding in favor of Mulvaney and, several months later, English resigning from her post.
Since her resignation, English spent roughly a year as the Director of Financial Services Advocacy and Outreach with the Consumer Federation of America. After that (and until present), English has been Director of Policy with New York's regulator, the Department of Financial Services.
According to the Biden-Harris official transition page, the full CFPB review team consists of:
