Roughly one in 20 people aren’t paying back their federal student loans. That’s actually good financial news for some in western New York.
Perinton-based ConServe, founded in 1985, more than doubled its employment in the past year as it landed a U.S. Education Department contract to try to collect on defaulted loans.
And Pioneer Credit Recovery Inc., based in Arcade, Wyoming County, now employs almost 1,000 people at its locations in Batavia, Arcade and Perry.
The Education Department last week presented awards to the two companies for their first-place rankings among the various firms the federal government uses to collect on student loans in arrears.
