In a recent press release, West Virginia Attorney General Darrell McGraw said that his office had settled with a collection agency in the Buffalo, N.Y. area that was not properly licensed to collect debt in West Virginia (“WV AG Settles with Debt Collector; $290,000 in Debt Cancellation,” March 13).

The company — Brady, Caruso & Associates – agreed to forgive some $280,000 in West Virginia debt it was working and provide refund of about $9,000 to effected consumers.

But in a statement sent to insideARM, the company said that it is in the process of becoming properly licensed, a fact omitted from the attorney general’s press release.

Below is the text of the statement from Brady, Caruso & Associates:

In response to the recent press release from the WV Attorney General we have taken the necessary steps to be licensed in that state.  Being in business for three years we had a total of 170 accounts related to West Virginia. We feel the need to be licensed there, even though the collection activity will cease. Brady and Caruso have addressed the current situation and have promptly taken care of it.
